Objective. The workshop will define the state-of-the-art, share recent results, and develop a vision for further research in sustainable computing at the intersection of technology, economics, and policy. The workshop will feature prepared talks, panel discussions, and break-out sessions. The aim of this workshop will be to produce a white paper and publish a research perspective at a major media outlet or journal.
Topics. The workshop will explore perspectives from a broad spectrum of academics and practitioners. We will need advances in carbon accounting to quantify the scope of the challenge and reveal opportunities for fruitful action. We will need tenable scaling paths for artificial intelligence, enabling qualitatively new applications while mitigating the costs of building and operating hyperscale data centers. Finally, we will need new strategies for connecting data centers to energy infrastructure and markets.
Organization. The workshop is organized by Carbon Connect (https://carbonconnect.eco/), a team of researchers who have been awarded an Expedition in Computing by the National Science Foundation. It will be hosted by the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering and Wharton School.
