“While there are predictable seasonal patterns, weather extremes can quickly add to soaring bills even if you agreed on a fixed electricity price with your provider. If you want to avoid bill surprises, it is important that you occasionally check on your up-to-date power consumption through your utility’s online portal, and adjust if needed,” says Arthur van Benthem, Associate Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Wharton School.
